Eliza's loneliness was an event horizon.
It would draw her in and crush her,
If no one reached out and put her back. So Peter did by degrees.
He anchored her with his words and his touch.
It was a long process with no obvious success.
There were entire weeks that went by without anything changing.
Eliza went on her routine in silence, barely responding when someone spoke to her.
She got a hunted look that made Peter's stomach churn.
He coaxed her back with promises of mulled wine, sitting in front of the fire,
Or with new songs or books or trips to the museum.
She went outside more, she talked more, she actually slept.
He stopped worrying so much about losing her to the crush,
And started worrying about what she left behind when she came back.
